Picture #10: Skara Brae, Orkney Mainland.

Ancient excavations at Skara Brae, Orkney Isles

Skara Brae is a preserved Neolithic village that was covered by sand for 4,500 years until exposed by a storm in 1850. Orkney is in fact well known as a home for a succession of island civilisations from the stone  and iron ages through Norse and Celtic settlements and beyond to the present day.
